Dentures 101
Dentures are removable devices that replace missing teeth. Depending on need, dentures either come as a complete or partial replacement. A complete denture replaces an entire set of upper or lower teeth. Partial dentures are similar to bridges. For patients missing several teeth in a row, a partial denture can be attached for support and help prevent the shifting of other teeth into the space available.
We custom fit all of our dentures based on impressions and images of your mouth and jaw, so you feel maximum comfort. The materials we use depend on the patient, but can include porcelain, metal, ceramic, plastic, or a combination.
A good set of dentures will not get in your way. You’ll be able to eat and drink like normal, speak clearly, and wear your smile again. Dentures also help support the jaw by helping retain a natural biting and chewing function that prevents jaw misalignment. And they support your oral health going forward by preserving underlying bone and keeping your gum tissues healthy.
Good Denture Care
Dentures tend to last between five to ten years long. With proper care, you can maintain your denture for almost a decade. To best take care of your denture, we recommend cleaning it regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive denture cleaner. Even with partial dentures, it’s important to brush and floss to maintain good condition and stave off future tooth loss.
Relining Older Dentures
Older denture sets will likely benefit from relining. When a denture is relined, its underside is reshaped to fit more comfortably against your gums. This reshaping will also benefit patients whose gums have softened and decreased with age. If you have dentures that hurt your mouth, Forestville Family Dental can do a quick reline that will eliminate your discomfort.
